When my sister was going through her rebellious time, I got NO attention or support. All their energy was focused on her. I was in high school about to go to college, so I was older and dealt with it. But at the same time, I was jealous and angry that no one seemed to care about me. I think pointing out his strengths in math is a great way to point out how autism helps him and how he is smart in other ways kids his age aren't! Or that autism makes him honest, and kind. Or their sense of humor (oh the jokes my 3 year old ASD boy can make and he has a severe speech delay too!) Or that he is so good at the iPad!

I can't wait to hear about his progress - for a mom who's 3 year old was just diagnosed this year, this post gives me hope!Meg from Megs A Mommy!https://www.blogger.com/profile/00212836526994808453noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9171728093837986877.post-18318317839881114332012-11-20T09:57:05.103-08:002012-11-20T09:57:05.103-08:00I enjoyed reading this post, thank you. I do want to thank you though because I'm in a similar situation and reading your story is helping me. My son is 6 and in 1st grade and he's a handful for the teachers. But he's managing with the school work (with lots of redirection and attention) and he's happy. They have gingerly been trying to suggest medicating him but I feel like it would be more to make their lives easier than to help my son. So far we have chosen not to go down that path. I hope your son can find some lasting peace. It must be awful to have those negative thoughts/feelings. I have found the best thing I can do for her, besides closely monitoring her medication, is helping her learn to self regulate. Among the tools she has learned to use over the last 5 years are music, weighted vest/blanket, a fidget wedge, meditation, yoga, tapping (EFT), swinging, jumping jacks, and using the trampoline. I am surprised they put your son on ritalin- they usually stay away from ritalin if a child has a mood disorder. There are other ADHD medications out there that do not have the side effects of ritalin.GB's Momhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08866513131959998883noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9171728093837986877.post-54227678999505918212012-10-12T17:32:11.231-07:002012-10-12T17:32:11.231-07:00Love to you and your kiddos. Hayden is very particular about food as well, but he is getting a little better and he definitely doesn't have a weight problem. I get frustrated with his pickiness and it's nowhere near as severe as JT's pickiness. And I know it's not just him being picky and bratty. I imagine it has a lot to do with sensory stuff, OCD stuff, and his Autism. And then it's complicated by his medications and their side effects. Major poo! I wish you luck as you struggle with this and hopefully he will gain weight soon!Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18117857450870438275noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9171728093837986877.post-53736467737912862612012-06-26T14:32:26.651-07:002012-06-26T14:32:26.651-07:00I'm so sorry Kate.
